Perfume Genius

Seattle-based solo artist Perfume Genius, the stage name taken by Mike Hadreas, is known for producing music that ranges from delicate piano ballads to glam rock stunners, poetically exploring topics such as sexuality, domestic abuse, and homophobia. After a stint in Williamsburg, Hadreas returned to his hometown outside of Seattle and began recording music in 2005. By 2008, he adopted his current moniker and started hosting his music and homemade videos online, which garnered the attention of UK indie band Los Campesinos!, who helped him get a deal with their label to release his first single, “Mr. Peterson,” in 2009. Perfume Genius’ full-length debut, Learning, which presented its tracks in the order in which they were recorded, dropped in 2010 and quickly received critical acclaim, as did his second full-length release, Put Your Back N 2 It, which released in 2012. In 2014, Hadreas released his third album, Too Bright, which was co-produced by Portishead’s Adrian Utley. The album, critically lauded for its intimate nature, featured the hit track “Queen,” which Hadreas performed on The Late Show with David Letterman. This May, Hadrias released the fourth Perfume Genius album, No Shape, and the album has been his most highly acclaimed yet, with it reaching No. 13 on Billboard’s Top Independent album charts and received a rating of 8.8 from Pitchfork. Since the album’s release, Hadrias has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
